Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for safety.
2. Check Brake Fluid
  • Remove the master cylinder cap to inspect the brake fluid level.
  • If low, top off with the appropriate brake fluid (DOT 4 for most BMWs).
  • If the fluid is contaminated, proceed to flush the brake system.
3. Inspect and Repair Brake Booster
  • Locate the brake booster, typically mounted on the firewall.
  • Use a vacuum gauge to check the brake booster operation:
    • Disconnect the vacuum line from the booster and connect the gauge.
    • Ensure the gauge reads at least 18 inHg; if not, inspect the vacuum supply line.
  • If the brake booster is faulty, remove it by:
    • Detaching the brake master cylinder from the booster (remove the retaining nuts).
    • Unbolting the brake booster from the firewall and removing it.
4. Replace the Brake Booster
  • Install the new brake booster:
    • Position the new brake booster and secure it with bolts to the firewall.
    • Reattach the brake master cylinder and tighten retaining nuts to the specified torque (typically 24 Nm).
  • Reconnect the vacuum line securely.
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Test the brake pedal for firmness and proper operation.
  • If any brake fluid was added, bleed the brake system to remove air bubbles.
