Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid, UV dye (if needed), fluid catch pan.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is off.
2. Locate the Leak
  • Inspect the power steering system components visually.
  • If needed, add UV dye to the power steering fluid and operate the vehicle to identify leak source under UV light.
3. Replace Damaged Components
  • Power Steering Pump:

    1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
    2. Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump.
    3. Disconnect the power steering fluid lines (use a fluid catch pan).
    4. Remove the pump mounting bolts and take out the pump.
    5. Install the new power steering pump and torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  • Hoses:

    1. If hoses are damaged, disconnect them from the pump and steering rack.
    2. Replace with new hoses and secure them properly.
  • Steering Rack:

    1. If the steering rack is leaking, it may need to be replaced.
    2. Disconnect the steering shaft and fluid lines.
    3. Remove mounting bolts and carefully take out the steering rack.
    4. Install the new steering rack and reattach all components.
4. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with the recommended fluid type.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed air from the system.
5. Final Inspection
  • Check for leaks around replaced components.
  • Ensure the fluid level is correct and top off if necessary.
