Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, anti-squeal lubricant.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and securely supported by jack stands before beginning work.
2. Remove Wheel
  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where the brakes are squeaking.
  2. Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  3. Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel to access the brake components.
3. Inspect and Clean Brake Components
  1. Use brake cleaner to spray the brake pads, calipers, and rotors.
  2. Wipe down all components using a clean cloth to remove dust and debris.
  3. Check the brake pads for wear and replace if they are below the minimum thickness.
  4. Inspect the rotors for scoring; if damaged, they may need resurfacing or replacement.
4. Lubricate Brake Components
  1. Apply anti-squeal lubricant on the back of the brake pads where they contact the caliper.
  2. Lubricate the caliper slides and pins to ensure smooth operation of the caliper.
  3. Ensure no lubricant is applied to the friction surface of the pads or rotors.
5. Reassemble and Reinstall
  1. Position the brake pads back into the caliper.
  2. Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  3. Lower the vehicle and then use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 80-100 ft-lbs for most BMWs).
