Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical issues.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels to access the steering components.
  • Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering rack using a wrench.
  • Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe with a socket and ratchet.
  • Carefully pull the steering rack out, taking care not to damage any attached components.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Clean the steering rack and surrounding areas to prepare for inspection.
  • Inspect the seals for wear or damage. If necessary, replace the seals with a seal kit specific to the BMW F30/F31.
  • Apply a suitable lubricant to the new seals before installation.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Position the new or repaired steering rack back into place.
  • Reattach the steering rack to the subframe using the original bolts and torque them to manufacturer specifications (usually around 30 Nm).
  • Reconnect the tie rod ends and tighten securely.
5. Refill and Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Refill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid (usually ATF or a specific power steering fluid).
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed the system of air.
  • Check for leaks around the steering rack and hoses.
