Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, socket set, torque wrench, power steering fluid, steering rack removal tool (if necessary).
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access to the steering components.
2. Remove the Old Steering Rack
  1. Disconnect the Battery:

    • Remove the negative terminal from the battery to prevent electrical issues.
  2. Drain Power Steering Fluid:

    • Place a drain pan under the power steering reservoir and disconnect the return line to drain the fluid.
  3. Remove the Tie Rod Ends:

    • Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end nut, then use a socket to unscrew the nut.
    • Use a tie rod end puller to separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  4. Disconnect Steering Column:

    • Remove the bolts securing the steering column to the steering rack.
    • Carefully disconnect the universal joint from the steering column.
  5. Unbolt the Steering Rack:

    • Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe using a socket.
    • Slide the steering rack out of its mounting position.
3. Install the New Steering Rack
  1. Position the New Steering Rack:

    • Align the new steering rack with the mounting points and slide it into position.
  2. Secure the Steering Rack:

    • Tighten the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque (usually around 30-40 Nm, but verify with a service manual).
  3. Reconnect the Steering Column:

    • Attach the universal joint back to the steering column and secure it with the previously removed bolts.
  4. Reconnect the Tie Rod Ends:

    • Insert the tie rod into the steering knuckle, then install the nut and tighten it.
    • Insert a new cotter pin to secure the connection.
  5. Reconnect Fluid Lines:

    • Reconnect the power steering lines, ensuring they are snug and leak-free.
4. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid type as specified in the owner’s manual.
5. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the battery, lower the vehicle, and check for any leaks.
  • Test the steering for smooth operation and proper alignment.
