Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: OBD-II scanner, socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, multimeter, compression tester, and possibly a fuel injector tester.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on electrical components.
2. Replace Ignition Coil
  1. Locate the ignition coil for cylinder 3 (refer to the engine layout).
  2. Remove the engine cover if applicable to access the ignition coils.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  4. Remove the bolt securing the ignition coil using a socket.
  5. Gently pull the ignition coil out of the spark plug well.
  6. Install the new ignition coil by reversing the removal steps and ensuring it is seated properly.
  7. Reconnect the electrical connector.
3. Inspect/Replace Spark Plug
  1. Remove the ignition coil again to access the spark plug.
  2. Using a spark plug socket, remove the spark plug from cylinder 3.
  3. Inspect the spark plug for wear or fouling (replace if necessary).
  4. Measure and adjust the gap of the new spark plug to manufacturer specifications (usually around 0.035 inches for BMW).
  5. Install the new spark plug and torque to the manufacturer's specifications (typically about 18 lb-ft).
4. Check/Replace Fuel Injector
  1. Disconnect the fuel injector connector for cylinder 3.
  2. Remove the fuel rail (if necessary) to access the fuel injector.
  3. Remove the retaining clip and pull out the fuel injector.
  4. Compare the old injector with the new one and install the new injector.
  5. Reinstall the fuel rail and reconnect the injector connector.
5. Reassemble and Test
  1. Reinstall any engine covers and ensure all components are securely fastened.
  2. Reconnect the battery.
  3. Start the engine and allow it to warm up.
  4. Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the fault codes.
